Giving up sugar while on a diet can be really difficult. In fact, we instantly look for ways to replace that sugar without even giving the 21 day detox a full shot. Let’s say you plan to start your diet on Monday and go shopping over the weekend at the supermarket to prepare yourself for the long struggle ahead. I bet in addition to stocking your grocery cart with apples, carrots and chicken breast, you’re also lurking along the aisles full of “sugar-free” treats and sweets. STOP! Let me tell you why
DO NOT eat or drink “sugar-free” foods while dieting.
I am sure this is very depressing to read. Maybe you want to dismiss this entirely as you happily purchased 6 sugar-free ice cream cones and a case of your favorite diet coke. Now, I could go into the million reasons why consuming artificial sweeteners are bad for you and terrible for your health – but I won’t. Because let’s face it, most people don’t really care about that when they’re trying to lose weight. A lot of us simply just want to look trim and don’t care about the consequences – and I’m not here to lecture you about your health.
But what I WILL tell you is that consuming artificial sweeteners just makes you crave sweets MORE. Having a regular coke will not make you crave drinking another 2 and then eating an entire cheesecake afterwards. Drinking a diet coke WILL. After you eat sugar-free foods, your body begins to crave sugar like crazy afterwards, to the point where you will eat whatever you want and all those calories add up. I don’t care if the ice cream or brownie is “sugar-free”, it’s still LOADED with calories and fat. Usually a chocolate bar with sugar has the same calorie content as sugar-free one. Just avoid this entirely and you’ll be good.
Drink plenty of water and calorie-free liquids
Sometimes we think we are hungry when in fact we’re just thirsty or dehydrated. As a kid, my mom always told me “Drink a glass of water!” when I told her I was hungry late at night. And usually she was right, I’d feel fine and satisfied afterwards. Most people drink around 3-4 glasses of water a day when we should be drinking 8 or more glasses. When you are dieting, it is more important than ever to make sure you are getting in that water. Do what you need to do in order to keep track of your water intake. Put a magnetic whiteboard on your fridge and draw 8 boxes on it. Tick the boxes as you go through out the day. Do whatever you need to in order to meet that 8 glass a day goal.
You can also enjoy other drinks if you’re not too keen on water all day long. Add some fruit slices to your water to create a sort of “fat flush fruit infusion”. Use lemon slices, orange slices or even grapefruit to add some zing to your water. Don’t add a packet of Splenda or other artificial sweetener as that will just make you crave more sweets. Instead, use a little packet of all natural Stevia.
In the morning, enjoy a cup of black coffee or tea. Feel free to add milk as a whitener but avoid heavy cream or full-fat milk.
If you follow these tips, they will help you fight the sugar cravings and keep your tummy full while you’re dieting!
